4 Summary of Session 1

In this first session of the course, you have been introduced to the idea of empire as having varying manifestations across time and geography. You have explored how historians’ perspectives on empire have evolved, reflecting their contemporary contexts. You have looked at how empire’s archives were shaped by imperial power and have been analysed by historians for insights into marginalised perspectives. You have also been introduced to how crucial a role maps played in empire, symbolising ownership and control. Captain Cook’s maps of Australia exemplify European conquest and colonisation, often erasing indigenous presence and naming territories in English.

Session 2 will use case studies to explore some aspects of power used in the context of empires. You can go to Session 2 [Tip: hold Ctrl and click a link to open it in a new tab. (Hide tip)] when you are ready.
