JANET SUMNER:
Welcome to the third week of Understanding numbers. And congratulations. You're over half-way through the course. This week, you'll really sink your teeth into using numbers for science. You'll learn how scientists present numbers to each other and the general public so that they make sense. You'll also learn that rounding numbers helps to both understand very long numbers and also gives a clue as to how confident a scientist is in the number. This week, you'll also learn how fractions and percentages are connected. The lead educator, Simon Kelley, has assured me you don't need to understand fractions nowadays to do basic science. You just need a calculator app on your phone and you need to stay away from the Percent button. There's also a video this week about negative numbers. And if you think you don't know about negative numbers then just consider the temperatures last winter. Next week is the last one for this short course so I'll see you then..
