Session 3: Mental health promotion and education

Introduction

On one hand, there are many complexities surrounding our understanding of children’s mental health and appreciating the reasons why a number of children are experiencing poor wellbeing and compromised mental health. On the other hand, it may also be helpful to recognise that there is a great deal that adults can do to improve children’s wellbeing, promote good mental health and consequently prevent serious and enduring mental health conditions in young children.

In this session, you will explore what is meant by ‘mental health promotion’ and how improvements in terms of education and understanding in relation to mental health can help us to support and promote mental wellbeing in children. You will also explore the foundations of ‘good mental health’, and the theories that underpin current beliefs and approaches.

‘Prevention is better than cure’ is an old saying, and this is applicable to mental health in the same way as it's applicable to physical health. This week, we look at health promotion and health education, and how this can help adults to minimise or prevent children from developing mental health problems. Mental health can be looked at as being like a recipe, meaning that there are certain ingredients that contribute to young children's mental health.
This week, we'll examine the ingredients of good mental health for young children. By understanding more about the ingredients that are helpful to good mental health, we can learn to appreciate how adults can promote children's mental health and potentially avoid some of the difficulties that children are experiencing.
Developing positive relationships is a vital ingredient for good mental health. Therefore, the theory of attachment is explored. We also discuss the concept of adverse childhood experiences and highlight that there's a great deal that adults can do with the family, community, and society to equip children to cope when such experiences occur.
The ability for children to develop perseverance and resilience is of importance for children to prevent mental health problems from occurring. The content highlights how this can help children to cope. This week, we have another practice quiz for you to do in preparation for the quiz you can do next week that counts towards your badge.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • understand what is meant by mental health promotion and education
  • explore some of the key ingredients of ‘good’ mental health in young children
  • reflect on the main components of attachment theory
  • consider the effects of attachment relationships on young children’s mental health and wellbeing
  • examine ways to prevent and minimise the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
  • have an awareness of how perseverance and resilience can be promoted in the early years.
