Chemistry Online Summer School 2020

This course was open in August of 2020 and is not available outside this time. Students who have completed the course in August of 2020 will have received an enrolment code to collect their digital badge.

An OpenSTEM online summer school providing you with an introduction to several analytical techniques in chemistry via four online investigations.

  • Measuring the level of nitrates in spring water (UV-Vis spectroscopy)
  • Pesticides in the environment (GC-MS)
  • Pharmaceutical compounds in drinking water (HPLC)
  • Exploring the composition of planetary atmospheres (Infra-red)
The analytical method for each technique was covered as well as general techniques such as preparing calibration standards and constructing a calibration curve. Investigations were completed online, either via an interactive screen experiment or via remote instrumentation (HPLC and IR), which included recording data and observations, plotting graphs and interpreting results.

To gain the badge, you must have successfully completed at least three of the four investigations and the associated quiz.
