      Welcome to this short course which will support Island Community Councillors and others with an interest in understanding the key parts of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018. This short course should take you approximately 30-60 minutes to complete.

      Who is this course for?

      This course is primarily for Island Community Councillors to support them to understand the most relevant parts of the Act, which can support their efforts to affect decision-making and policy change. 

      As such, this course will focus on Parts 1–3 of the Act: 

      • Definitions of an 'island' and 'island community'. 
      • The National Islands Plan.
      • Island Community Impact Assessments (ICIAs).

      This course is produced by The Open University in Scotland in partnership with Scottish Rural Network and the Improvement Service.

  • Course learning outcomes

    After studying this course, you will:

    • Understand the origins and ambitions of the legislation, including what proponents of the legislation hoped it would achieve.
    • Understand what an 'island' and 'island community' are, as defined by the Act. 
    • Be aware of the National Islands Plan and its objectives. 
    • Understand what Island Community Impact Assessments (ICIAs) are and how you can ensure these are carried out appropriately by public bodies when making decisions which affect island communities.
