Making a discussion work in a course

One of the more difficult parts of online courses is making a discussion "sticky", that is getting people to actually discuss something. When I teach  online I find I have to create the initial post with a question or comment that makes other participants think.

Since this is my first time taking a course through OpenLearn CREATE, I am learning about the system as well as the content in this course.

Thank you!

Good point. As part of the OAD I can say we're definitely learning too :)
All the feedback we get will be very useful to shape things into the future.

Astrotourism and social policies

Actually I´m working in a project to make astrotourism around a natural park, near Bogota, Colombia.
I´m very excited about achieving this goal because, not only deals with astronomy (what I love) but also with helping in the social development of a community of people, who will obtain some econmic benefits, and will learn to protect the nature.
I hope that from the administrative point of view everythign willl be ok.

@Irma I hope the same for your project.

The global goal for sustanable development

The global goals for sustanable development document is really nice. I read it and retrieve at least 5 which so important for my country develoment. In fact all of them apply but these 5 could be related to some activities we try to do do in our group and we are proud:

goal 4 (quality education). goal 5 (gender equality)., goal 10 (reduced inequality),goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and goal 17 (partnerships for the goals).

Thanks

Astronomy fits them all. But it is our task to let people feel astronomy and think about an astronomy. Universe is everywhere and we are Universe itself.

People need to become closer to sky without mediators, that is the majer reason we use the telescopes for education.

Información para proyecto

He comenzado el curso y me surgen muchas inquietudes. La mas importante que tengo por ahora es: ¿El proyecto tiene que estar enmarcado en una institución para que este sea apoyado por la OAD?

Gracias

Congratulations OAD for this wonderful course! Indeed like Bonnie Thurber I got a write block when I found the discussion had no title or guidance. I am grateful there were others before me to break the ice!!!

I am wondering if OAD would consider giving expertise on projects that are not part of the annual call for proposals. What I mean is, sustaining SDGs through astronomy cannot be done without financial support. IAU OAD would like to support as many projects as possible so I find the IAU OAD call is intended for smaller scale projects. Would OAD consider a competition for bigger scale projects, even if then financing the project would be entirely/partially on the shoulders of the project leaders?

Also, I loved the idea that "all nations and civilisations have a history with the stars". It is so true and so beautiful. I wonder if OAD could/would intermediate opening up a virtual space where we could exhibit testimonies of this wonderful history with the stars from different corners of the Earth. More, I volunteer time to make this gallery of testimonies happen.

Thank you!
