A) What is Needs Analysis
It’s worth considering whether our target audience will accept our intervention to solve the problem — we don’t want to be imposing our ideas in a place where they are unwelcome — and whether we can make a feasible contribution to solving the problem with the resources available. In order to address these points we must conduct a Needs Analysis.
Needs analysis can be used to clarify a project’s aims and to
ensure that it is appropriate for the context within which it will be
delivered. A successful needs analysis increases the likelihood of project
success by ensuring that a project:
- responds to the real
needs of its target individuals, communities or organisations
- addresses a real
service gap
- is informed by an
understanding of the specific context in which it is delivered
- is sensitive to the
values, aims and priorities of its target audience
- engages and elicits
‘buy in’ from all relevant stakeholders
- takes appropriate
account of context-specific resources and barriers
- is appropriately
designed, feasible and likely to be cost-effective with a well-developed project
