learner-centred teaching

I really liked the idea of learner-centred teaching because it made me think about how much we sometimes focus on what the teacher is doing instead of what the learners are actually experiencing. For me, being learner-centred does not mean letting students do whatever they want. It means knowing your learners, considering what they already know and adapting your teaching to help them participate and learn.

One thing I am still wondering about is how easy it is to use learner-centred approaches with very large classes or with learners who have very different levels. I can see how group work and discussions can help, but I also think they require careful planning. How can a teacher make sure that the quieter learners are also participating and that the same students are not always doing all the talking?
