The World Bank Observation tool defines nine criteria to observe.

 

I think number 4, “checks for understanding,” is the most difficult to define and measure because teachers must guess students’ level of understanding through their behaviours and answers. However, these could result in false positives, since learning is an invisible cognitive process that cannot be seen inside students’ brains. Therefore, checks for understanding can be difficult to measure.
