Unit 4 Application Task

Attachment

Sorry to be late this this. This is a Unit overview for a series of lessons I taught before the summer. The main focus of the unit was discursive writing but the school already had a unit with Scots ad the main topic - specifically whether Scots should be a compulsory part of the curriculum. The school (I was new last year) already had lots of resources and I was able to add a few more that I had encountered as part of this course.

There were a few very effective aspects of the unit: students interviewing their parents or grandparents about Scots opened up lots of interesting avenues and perspectives. The favourite Scots words poster was lots of fun too and has lead to a nice display of words as a reminder for students. I added an extra lesson looking at other languages of the UK (Welsh, Cornish and the different varieties of Gaelic) - which I think really helped to change some students perspectives around English.

The biggest weakness of the unit was that central question and perhaps the length of topic itself. The focus on being compulsory and in school led a few students to take quite a hostile approach to Scots while focusing on it for so long did put a few students off.

In future I hope to either adapt the question used for the discursive essay - or rearrange the unit so it does not result in a discursive essay allowing for a wider range of approaches to Scots language.
