The performance

The performance is the only test which proves the quality of our script. The play comes to life in performance — the beautiful transformation of words into actions, happenings, or events.

The Performance and the response

The playwright sees the performance in every rehearsal, but people see it for the first time only at the time of performance. They are very curious about the subject. They always wish that they should get a memorable experience. The expectations vary. Age, education, personal worries, interests all do matter. That is all before the show begins. Once the play starts and catches everyone, people mostly forget themselves and get involved. The concentration or involvement is parallel to the effectiveness of the performance. If the actors are involved and do the perfect job, the audience gets carried away with the play.

Performance and rehearsals

The rehearsals decide the fate of the performance. Groups doing their rehearsals well are going to perform well. One thing which one has to remember is performance is different than the rehearsals. Here the audience factor gets added and is going to have its effects.

The effects are mostly positive. The emotions get multiplied and magnified in the presence of the audience. Actors have an experience that more the crowd, better is the performance. The children in the audience immediately get connected, and they do have uninhibited reactions.

The playwright and the performance

The playwright has to see the maximum number of shows. In every show, he has to pay attention to the audience. He will have some corrections or some new additions after getting to know the reactions. Not that everybody has the skill to put his response in words.

The playwright has to act like a detective if he cares for the audience opinions. Better not to meet people before the show. And during the show, he should select the seat so that he will not be the point of attraction. After the show, there is a possibility that people contact him and tell him about the play. He has to keep it cool and mostly listen. Here he has a chance to analyze the elements that he has worked on for last so many days. He has to note the response of the audience from their appreciation without words. Their simple sigh will have meaning. The playwright can know it, being in theatre.

After the performance

The people come and meet actors, to opine, appreciate or suggest. Some people give reactions in writing afterward. All are to be considered when a final draft is done. It will be done by the playwright alone. This final draft will be printed in a book for people.

A Landscape, Rehearsal video

Here is a link on youtube of one of the rehearsals of `a landscape.'

And the village had a ceremony going on that evening, so the background is noisy at places. You have trouble watching it, imagine how actors would have managed to concentrate. This video was done in 2012. I have the only video of this production. The children have grown up now. So this cannot be done again. I am sorry for the inconvenience. You can watch it for the costumes and movements. The subtitles are specially done for this course.
