Academic Advising and Study Abroad

Once you have declared your major and you have familiarized yourself with DegreeWorks and which courses you need in order to graduate, schedule a meeting with your Academic Advisor within your Major.

This section will help students navigate the Academic Advising process in the context of study abroad.

SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR

Scheduling an appointment with your Academic Advisor varies depending on your major - if you aren't sure where to start email the USD Department or your Academic Advisor to find out your next steps.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

While your Study Abroad Advisor is an expert in study abroad programs and logistics, Academic Advisors are the best suited to discuss your individual academic needs as a student. Once you have a solid understanding of your academic needs, challenges, and options in general, then you can understand how study abroad fits into your academic plan based on the program you choose and if it's a good academic fit.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DISCUSS IN YOUR MEETING?

  • An academic/graduation plan based on your major and when a semester abroad fits best
  • Discuss which USD courses you would need to take for a semester abroad
  • Are there any courses that you MUST take in that semester? (Ie, if you aren't able to get that course will you be behind academically?)
  • How many CORE courses are you able to take?
