SECTION 9 Working with couples across languages

  • Interpreter-mediated couple therapy
  • Clinical supervision across languages

EXERCISE
In the film the supervisee is asking for the supervisor’s help to think through a difficult situation she encountered working with a couple, mediated by an interpreter.
You might want to write down some ideas about how you could help her to think about this.
Now watch the film (Skype Supervision Session):

Now watch the following film (The Therapy Session). This film is of the actual therapy session as described by your supervisee in the remote supervision session.

Here are some questions to think about.
1.    The interpreter asked the therapist which bits she should translate. What do you think about that?
2.    Why did the interpreter need to ask the therapist that question?
3.    When do you think the therapist became passive?
4.    What would you have done differently?
5.    How do you think that “talking about the talking” – discussing the communication and attitudes to turn-taking with all the participants – might have been helpful?
