Best Practices

We’ll finish up the course with some short best practices for the use of AI in legal education and a hands-on tutorial with CaseSnappy.

To ensure responsible use of AI in your legal research, CaseSnappy recommends:

  • Understand the role of AI in your studies: use AI tools like CaseSnappy to assist your legal research, but don’t rely on them to replace your own critical thinking. AI is a tool to enhance – and not substitute – your understanding of the law.
  • Avoid over-reliance on AI tools: use AI as a starting point to identify and understand relevant cases and concepts, but still read judgments, statutes, and academic commentary to supplement AI's assistance. Remember that AI tools won't always be accurate and that cross-referencing AI output with primary legal sources is important.
  • Cite responsibly: AI tools like CaseSnappy can help you to find legal authorities, but make sure you are citing primary sources (e.g. cases and legislation) instead of relying solely on AI summaries.
  • Be aware of plagiarism risks: never copy AI content, such as summaries, directly into your assignments. Use AI to inform your understanding, but always write answers in your own words. Understand and follow your faculty's rules regarding AI use.
  • Ask for help when needed: unsure about how to use AI responsibly or interpret the outputs? Seek guidance from your professors, academic advisors, or online resources.
  • Stay up-to-date with developments in AI: stay informed about emerging AI technologies in the legal world. Understanding these tools will help you to prepare for the future – whether you choose to become a lawyer or not!
