Making social media work in Higher Education

This free course explores the potential of social media as a space that can be used to enhance students’ experience in Higher Education/University. It examines how students can take advantage of platforms such as Facebook, X (previously known as Twitter) and WhatsApp to engage and connect with fellow students and build their networks. It also examines the common pitfalls and uses case studies to provide practical advice on how students can manage the risk they are exposed to. This course will be of interest to all students who wish to use social media safely as part of their Higher Education experience. 


Course learning outcomes

After studying this course, you should be able to:

  • understand the personal impact of social media and make informed choices about the types of social media you are willing to engage with
  • recognise the benefits of engaging in social media as part of HE educational studies
  • recognise the risks and potential negative consequences of engaging in social media
  • develop strategies to decide how best to engage in social media during Higher Education to optimise your experience.
