Whenever we join a new community, it’s only natural to worry about fitting in and whether we will find success.
As you begin your transition to a new college or university, you are likely to feel apprehensive and wonder how you will fit in. What will the other students think of you? What will the lecturers think of you? Are you going to be able to do the work? And are you the only one who will struggle? Higher Education students at Cardiff and the Vale College share their top tips for preparing for the transition.
1. Connect with other students
See if you can find others who are on your course who are already in their first year. They might offer some valuable insights and advice.
2. Feedback to the institution
Be clear from the start about what support you need. Reach out to your college or university before starting your course so that they know how to help you.
3. Look for role models
Are there students or people from your sector that you look up to? What can you learn from them?
4. Get to know what support is available
Universities and colleges will have a whole range of support available, including study skills, wellbeing and careers advice. So don't struggle, make the most of it!
5. Complete a ‘values reflection’
Do this to identify what things are important to you. Then regularly check that you are spending time and making decisions to support those values.
