What does the world look like to a person with a visual impairment? How does restricted vision impact on everyday life? How can you offer assistance without taking control? The video tracks on this album simulate what the world looks like to people with a range of visual impairments, and show good practice when acting as a sighted guide. The audio tracks offer personal perspectives from two people living with severe visual impairment. This material forms part of The Open University's Pre-registration nursing programme.

Seeing things differently
I found these videos very informative. Thank you. I have a friend who is Blind so this has reinforced some of the challenges she faces. We do use some of the techniques, e.g. the clock numbers when explaining where food is on her plate but I know she still struggles with eating out in public too. The nurses running off in the hospital was a real issue for her too and had to be addressed by the consultant. A simple note on her file now explains to wait and to assist her which works well.. One thing I found very hard was explaining to someone , when we are out together, that she cannot see. I felt it was rude of ME to say, so we have talked it through and she said she is much happier that I explain especially as it's not obvious to others that she cannot see them suddenly approaching to speak to her. I found the videos of walking into the office good, especially the one with central vision loss as this is how her sight loss started.Thank you for giving me a better undertsanding.
