Further reading

Brown, M.J.E. (1966) Schubert: A Critical Biography, London, Macmillan. A fascinating and thoughtful study, which explodes many of the 'romantic myths' about Schubert's work.
Capell, R. (1957) Schubert's Songs, 2nd rev. edn, New York and London, Duckworth. Still the best study of Schubert's songs.
Deutsch, O.E. (1946) Schubert: A Documentary Biography, London, Dent. This was the first, and remains the most important, collection of documents relating to Schubert. A book to dip into for insights into Schubert's life and work in Vienna.
The Hyperion Schubert Edition, Complete Songs (1988–), 37 volumes, London, Hyperion Records. A series of CDs which includes all of Schubert's 600 Lieder. The series is masterminded by the pianist Graham Johnson, whose notes for the CD booklets are scholarly and highly informative. A book on Schubert's songs by Graham Johnson is to be published by Yale University Press (currently in press, 2004).
