The OppAttune project
As members of the public, we face new opportunities when it comes to democracy. We can make changes without using our MPs or other representatives. In short, we can engage in direct democracy. We can use on-line social media profiles, hashtags and offline we can create marches, sign e-petitions, and join social movements. With these new powers, come new challenges in the face of mobilisation towards political extremes, hate speech and polarisation. The OppAttune project has been working to up-skill the public to navigate how polarisation and extremism happens and how to develop their political literacy in a divisive world.
When someone says you are being political, they are rarely understood to be paying you a compliment. However, learning to play the game of “being political” is crucial to everyone now that democracies are undoubtedly under threat. At the moment, the public are encouraged to put aside self-interest and build consensus and shared priorities.
The i-Attune is a new self-test interactive tool that offers the public a new way to develop their political literacy and get the measure of their own extremism. In other words, to ‘be political’ in a way that allows you to reflect on how you attune and engage with others with whom you may agree or disagree politically.
