National Government

‘National Government’ is a term given to coalition governments formed during times of crisis, such as wartime. The intention is to create a government of national unity. In the UK, a ‘national government’ headed by David Lloyd George was formed in 1916, during the First World War, lasting until 1922; and in 1931 a ‘national government’ was formed under Ramsey Macdonald which lasted, with several changes of prime minister (Stanley Baldwin, Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill) until 1945.
