1.6 Find a percentage of a number

Suppose a mathematics exam is out of 75 points, and students need to achieve at least 60 per cent to pass. How many points guarantee a passing grade?

To pass, the student has to earn at least 60 per cent of 75. Here, we can change the percentage into a fraction, then calculate 60 divided by 100 multiplication 75 to find the required point amount. You can work out the points necessary by simplifying the fraction and then multiplying.

Here is one way of reaching the answer: equation sequence part 1 60 divided by 100 multiplication 75 equals part 2 six divided by 10 multiplication 75 equals part 3 three divided by five multiplication 75 equals part 4 three divided by five multiplication 75 divided by one equals part 5 three multiplication seven times five super 15 divided by 51 multiplication one equals part 6 three multiplication 15 equals part 7 45.

Or, you can convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply by this, as follows:

60% = 0.6

So required marks = 0.6 x 75 = 45.

You can use either method.

To recap:

To find a given percentage of a number:

  • Convert the percentage to either a fraction or a decimal, and then multiply by the number.
