6 Summary of Session 2

Having completed the second session you should have a better understanding of how a range of politics issues have impacted not only the tournament, but FIFA more generally. The main learning points are:

  • FIFA have a chequered history when it comes to involving themselves in international politics through their responses to global issues.
  • Despite this, both FIFA’s formation and early men’s World Cup tournaments were impacted by political themes.
  • Activism and boycotts both have the ability to disrupt World Cups.
  • Sportswashing, while generally considered negative, arguably has some unintended benefits relating to the visibility of human rights.
