2.2 Common social media violations

You can avoid breaching of social media policy if you understand how to interpret the common elements of these sets of rules. For example, The Open University Social Media Policy sets out that unacceptable behaviour includes

  • Cyberbullying
  • Trolling
  • Harassment
  • Hate speech
  • Collusion or cheating on assignments
  • Posting or re-posting abuse
  • Posting or re-posting offensive or defamatory images or using offensive or defamatory language
  • Posting or re-posting discriminatory material
  • Posting or re-posting anything that may bring The Open University into disrepute or threaten the safety of staff (including former staff) and students or anyone connected with the university.

Some of these are more obvious than others. In this section you will explore some examples of where students have the potential to contravene social media policies.
