5.2 Building confidence

Use of technology in a virtual team is unavoidable, and how much of an issue that is might depend on whether you have chosen to join a virtual team or whether circumstances have pushed you into it, like Lauren’s experience in Section 2.

Many of us lack confidence when it comes to new technology but there are various ways to tackle this problem.

Bradley (2023) suggests the following:

  • setting realistic goals and expectations – start small and break goals into achievable milestones
  • breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps – understand what is required, prioritise and sequence, and celebrate success
  • seeking support and mentorship – find a mentor, join communities and forums, explore online tutorials and collaborate
  • practicing regularly and embracing failure as a learning opportunity – set aside regular time to practise, learn from your mistakes and appreciate the progress that you make.

If you apply for a job that involves remote working – it will be advantageous to share with the employer any experience of using relevant technology, or your enthusiasm for learning. If you haven’t had a chance to use it in the workplace, try using a communication platform such as Zoom or FaceTime with friends and family.

As you will know yourself, the more often you engage with new forms of technology, the more proficient you will become in using them!
