3.2 Another model

The Mind Tools Content Team (no date) explains the RACI Matrix – another way to look at functional roles and responsibilities within a team:

  • R = Responsible – these people are the doers of the work

  • A = Accountable – this person signs off/approves when a task is completed or a decision is made

  • C = Consulted – these people need to give their input before the work can be done

  • I = Informed – these people need to be updated on progress but not formally consulted.

Using this system, every team task, milestone and decision is listed and then roles and responsibilities are clarified and recorded.

Next you will consider different behavioural, or personality-based, roles in a team, specifically looking at Belbin’s 9 team roles. You’ll notice that some might overlap with the functional roles you’ve just considered as certain personality types align better with some functions than others.
