The ‘multicultural’ approach

A worldview that embraces multiculturalism and inclusivity approaches race and ethnicity with openness and curiosity. Parents and practitioners with this worldview:

  • see diversity as strengthening the learning environment
  • actively learn about different cultural perspectives
  • recognise that children’s backgrounds bring valuable knowledge and experiences
  • understand that ‘fair’ doesn’t always mean ‘the same’ – different children may need different support.

In practice, this might look like:

  • creating classroom environments that reflect all children’s backgrounds
  • adapting activities to include diverse examples and perspectives
  • learning key phrases in children’s home languages
  • involving families in sharing their cultural knowledge.
