Glossary
- In-group
- The social group that a person feels they belong to. For children, this might be people who share the same race, culture, or other identity traits as them.
- Out-group
- A group that a person feels they do not belong to. Children may see people in the out-group as ‘different’ from themselves or their in-group.
- Pro-white bias
- When children (or adults) start to prefer white people or features linked with whiteness over people from other racial groups. Research shows this can develop very early in childhood if not challenged.
- Racialisation
- The political process of assigning racial identities to groups that did not initially identify as such
- Racial identity
- How people see themselves and others in terms of race. It includes understanding your own racial background, how others see you, and how this affects your sense of self and belonging.
