1 Measuring anxiety levels

The techniques described in Session 3 were designed to reframe your relationship with maths, and give you strategies to address procrastination and avoidance related to maths anxiety. This should enable you to get started on your maths studies. However, to ensure you don’t get too anxious while studying, it is important to monitor your anxiety levels.

The Growth Zone Model was developed by Clare Lee and Sue Johnston-Wilder (2017) to enable learners to articulate and understand the emotions they feel when studying maths. The model consists of three different zones: comfort, growth and anxiety. Whenever someone is studying maths, they should be able to use this model to assess their anxiety levels and place themselves in one of the three zones.
