3.1 Indicating present, past and future in English
Verb tense is the way you can show whether an event takes place in the past, the present or the future. Figure 5 shows how this is achieved in English.

Past in Past: e.g. I had gone
Simple Past: e.g. I studied engineering
Past Progressive: e.g. I was working
Present Perfect (before now): e.g. I have studied French
Present Progressive (now): e.g. I am studying French
Future – will / going to: e.g. This chapter will investigate…
Under the line is the Present Simple (timeless present): e.g. I study French
