Summary

You have explored the main law making institutions in contemporary Scotland and considered the main sources of law. Together they help create the Scottish legal system. Significant constitutional change took place in 1998 with the establishment of the new Scottish Parliament with its own law making powers. That Parliament has been responsive to the needs of those living, working and conducting business in Scotland. Further significant change will take place following the negotiations over the UK’s planned exit from the EU. It is too early to identify what the result of that change may be and whether Scotland, having voted to remain, will achieve a unique settlement which differs from other nations within the UK.

After studying this week you should be able to explain:
