Study tip - share

When studying a new topic and to check your understanding try and explain your new knowledge to a family member/friend or study buddy in your own words. if you can convey this new knowledge so that they understand it and you can answer any follow-up questions from them, then you do have a good understanding of the new concept. If you find in trying to explain it or answer their questions you cannot then you know that you have gaps in your understanding and that can reveal to you areas that you need to investigate further or revisit.

I should have read other people's tips first, as this is what I have written too. I used this method when I was a student and have passed it onto my children and students too. When I first studied with the OU in 1987 I had a daughter and three sons still at home, so I used to share my knowledge with them. Sometimes I used to share an idea with whoever sat next to me on the bus travelling home. You are quite right in that explaining what you have learned in your own words, reveals what you have learned and what may need revising.
