Welcome to 'Creating an inclusive school' (CIS)

Welcome to this course!

Some of you will already have studied  'Inclusive teaching and learning' (ITL) which ran in February/March. This follows on from that course - but don't worry if you did not study it; this one will still make sense. Any concepts that you need to know are presented again, but in a different way so it remains interesting for those who did study ITL.

You will get more out of the course if you engage with the course forums. We have an excellent team of facilitators, who are looking forward to interacting with you. They will introduce themselves on this forum.

Use this forum to introduce yourself. You can either 'reply' to this comment, or 'start a new discussion', since this forum is dedicated to introductions.

Welcome! I am Dr Kris Stutchbury, the lead author on this course, with my colleagues Dr Helen Hendry and Dr Deborah Cooper. We are grateful to colleagues from Jamaica, KISE, Kenyatta University, Kenya and Gulu University, Uganda for their help and input, and to Gareth Dart and Sandra Amos for their expertise and help.

I was a Secondary Science teacher for 20 years, and have been a teacher educator for 10 years. I am currently Senior Lecturer in International Teacher Education and Academic Director of TESSA, and ZEST. I also work on OpenSTEM Africa. I live near Cambridge in the UK. I am looking forward to working with you on this course.

Good to see you Homad. Congratulations on completing the course! At the weekend I posted a link on ITL to a survey that COL would like as many as possible to complete. It is called 'Tell us your Story'. If you didn't see it because you has already finished, it would be great if you would consider completing it for us!

Looking forward to interacting with you.

Thank you for your warm welcome

I am Louise Archibald from Trinidad and Tobago. I have been involved in primary education for 19 years. I've been invited to study this course and have accepted the invitation as I believe that I will gain knowledge that will enable me to provide an inclusive environment within my school. Inclusiveness is often overlooked by teachers not intentionally but simply because there is a lack of knowledge and ideas on how to provide such an environment. I agree that all students can learn once their individuality is taken into consideration.

Greetings!

Hello Dr Stutchbury, facilitators and all my cohorts!

Since I was introduced to this course by my Headmistress, I became really interested and started looking forward to participating in it and learning from it.

I have worked as an English and Social Studies teacher in a (CAIE preparatory) primary school, in Karachi, Pakistan for about 13 years. During half of this time, I have worked as a teacher and a school administrator focusing on pastoral care. I have now moved to middle school and am continuing my responsibilities as a school adminstrator. My role is unique in the sense that I work with one batch of students and remain with them as their Year Tutor for the duration of their stay in one section. As they move to higher grades, I stay with them and take care of their social, emotional and academic needs.

Since I works with students, teachers and parents, I feel it is very important to ensure that each and every child feels included in his/her classroom, hence my interest in this course.

I am looking forward to learning from you all, especially from those who have done the previous course and can provide deeper insight as we explore different concepts.

Happy learning!
