Two important features of an inclusive school are; how welcoming the school is to diversity. In an inclusive school all learners must be welcomed to participate in all activities of the school and therefore it is the role of administrators to create that positive school climate (culture) to foster inclusion.

The positive attitude of teachers towards inclusion is yet another feature of inclusive schools. with positive attitudes teachers will not only feel the need to welcome everybody despite diversity in home background, physical disability, gender, religion etc but  will seek out information from various sources , adapt the curriculum when necessary  so that  their students will be able to actively participate in their learning. They also must be willing to  work collaboratively with their colleagues for the good of their students and the school at large.

It very clear in reading your response Nicola, that the attitude of teachers must be right for inclusive schools to function and be healthy for its learners. Also curriculum change will have to be suited to fit all learners regardless of their background, physical challenges among others. You have highlighted some valued points here.

Those are very important points. I belief that even if the teacher is trained but if she does not have a positive attitude then she or he will not be effective while they are teaching. A school environment should always be welcoming to all. It should caters for all types of needs, however, there are school that are not prepare for it. As teachers, we need to take the first step to encourage the school to move forward and cater for all children.

My first response - to Activity 1.2

The ways learners are welcomed to school and teachers attitude must complement each other. The welcome is the first impression of the school by the learners. If it is done in an unimpressive manner, the learners may not immediately acknowledge the positive attitudes of the teacher. They might still be brooding over the way they were welcome by the school at large.

Hello Nicola

I agree fully with the points you contributed.

I also found the thought shared by both Daniel and Lydia were beneficial. A major point that stuck with me is when Lydia emphasized the importance of having resources. I imagine a resource room where appropriate materials and equipment are provided for the child with special needs. Reference was made also to having ‘experts’ who will either support the ‘regular’ teacher in the typical classroom or where they will remain in the resource room that is set up for its purpose. I look forward to seeing this development in every school.

Hi Nicola,

I agree the having a welcoming disposition towards diversity and a positive attitude toward inclusion are essential features of an inclusive school. Acknowledging that inclusive education involves giving all children equal learning opportunities which meet their individual needs, I believe that the first step to achieve inclusion is by embracing the idea of valuing diversity. Moreover, willingness to respect and appreciate diversity can act as a driving force for staff members and pupils to achieve and maintain equity for all children.

What makes an inclusive school

In my view an inclusive school must have school staff that will collaborate with each other and their must be adjustment made to have the correct physical environment for the children who need it.

Like David said in the video these are important areas needed for inclusion. At a school that I am familiar with, the administrator ensures that no one is turned away. Being the person in charge he encourages collaboration among staff who meet regularly to discuss the right curriculum suitable for the children.

The physical environment also caters for inclusion by having ramps installed, washroom and rails placed where needed to accommodate wheelchairs.

Nicole, you have raised some critical points here.

We take so much time to ensure inclusive practices for the students, that we forget inclusion is also for the teachers. If teachers feel valued, respected, accepted and welcomed there is the greater likelihood that they will pay it forward. Inclusion is a way of thinking.

The other one is school resources that takes care of all the learners with their individual differences. These resources  should take care of the whole learner not just academic resources.

Positive Attitude described as a 'soft skill' is an important feature.

Allocating resources - by administration is another important feature

Most of the time when the school year begins teachers get involved in many tasks, from curriculum implementation, assessments, gradebooks, responding to concerns from students that they have less time for inclusive education, thus the administration comes in helpful in preparing professional development sessions and inviting experts to give prep talk on actual examples of activities that can be incorporated in the classroom and reach out to all and especially to the needed ones.

Seeking advice from others help teachers develop their 'soft skills'

1. Every student is valued and respected despite their disability or learning challenge.

The challenge here in my experience as an educator is that other students are sometimes mean or bully other students with  disability or learning challenge. This requires attention and education of students to respect their peers.

2. Continuous administrative support.

Let's be honest, usually with budget cuts the administrative support for special needs programs usually suffer to meet with the loss of finances in their operating budgets. This should not occur but it does.

2. Resources - As mentioned in the presentation by Ms Lydia and Daniel, a resource room is needed. It not only attends to the special need of the child/ren, but it encourages them to come back to school, as they feel belonged and apart of the school community.

Firstly, The school should create a positive attitude towards the implementation of inclusion for the students. By doing so, the school (administration, teachers, community and parents) should be responsible and play their part to eliminate exclusion by teaching teachers, adapting to the physical environment for disability children, allocating resources and creating policies for inclusion

Secondly, Understand the cultural of the students and create an environment for students with special needs such as having resource rooms, eliminate physical barriers that may obstruct the child and create a comfortable learning environment by providing basic needs of the students.

Personal attributes and attitudes of all members of a school, that is, administrators, teachers, security guards, custodians, cafeteria staff et al is just one of the key features of an inclusive school. This speaks to the culture of the institution. A collective show of kindness creates a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Another important feature is the creation of a Resource Room.  The purpose of which is not simply to supply assistance to teachers, but also to validate the learner and build their self esteem. "School is for you!"

I could not agree more with you on the point of attitude of all personnel. It can even be considered more important than physical infrastructure because if a child has all the physical amenities provided by the school, but is met with unwelcoming persons and persons who do not care or  truly understand what they really need, that environment would not help the child to be the best he/she can be.  caring, warm persons who really meet the needs of the child in every way despite the challenges would always be positive in their lives.

(1)  Collaborative Teaching which was implemented by trainng teachers to become equip to teach children with learning difficulties which are assign to a school to assist with the dissemination of knowledge to chilcren at all levels of the school.  Therefore, the curriculum is taylored to cater for the needs of children with special needs, so that the same learning outcome is achieved for the entire class.

(2)   Resource centres are used to meet the needs of the children but mainly as a support system for teachers to utilise in the classroom to ensure that concepts are taught using different variations or strategies to facilitate learning.

Two important features of an inclusive school are:

1.       Physical Infrastructure- the school should have the necessary accommodations to facilitate ease of access to children with physical disabilities (such as, ramps, rails, and the like). Accessibility to the school or institution is vital to ensure that children with physical impairments feel a sense of belonging. Also, there should be spaces available for individualized attention where necessary, such as, a student support room or a resource room / area as needed.

2.       Culture / Environment- the environment should be one that is welcoming and accepting of children with disabilities. Ideally, stakeholders should be willing to ‘go the extra mile’ to ensure that the individual needs of children are met.

I agree with your contribution Lily. Yes all children need to feel welcome to a school and by seeing the structure is catering for their needs it is a plus for children with this need.

Indeed, the attitude towards inclusion is as important in the characteristics of an inclusive school as the physical adaptations. A school can be built with all the adaptations such as ramps, rails in the toilets, wider cubicles for wheelchair accommodations etc, but if the attitudes of the administrators and teachers are negative toward the concept of inclusion, students with special needs will still remain excluded from such an environment. Teachers must deliberately cater for the special needs of students in the classroom. This involves the use of local resources especially tailored for the specific needs of the students.

Hi,

Attitude is definitely crucial to really providing inclusive education for all. Being in Mainstream school for many years and now having students with special needs now in this system we must be welcoming to them and include them in all that is happening in the school. We need to foster good relations with those students and their non-disabled peers and also encourage their parents to be involved in the life of the school more. We really need to make them feel like they belong, not just to learn but in all aspects of school life. Planning and catering to all students needs would show them they are part of the community and they would not feel excluded.

Thanks,

Regards,

Activity 1.2: What makes an inclusive school?

Two important features of an inclusive school are:

1) A curriculum that is adapted to the individual needs of each child. This can be effective when the school administrator and teachers demonstrate a willingness to have a positive attitude through communication and working together as a team. It also includes creating an awareness among other stakeholders such as children and parents.

2)The physical infrastructure adapted with a resource room equipped to cater for the child who has a special need. A layout of the environment adapted with toilet facilities, ramps and rails for children with wheelchairs.

I agree with your points. When the physical environment caters to those children with physical disabilities, these children are made to feel welcomed. This also fosters a sense of belong and acceptance.

Two important features of an Inclusive school

Two important features of an inclusive school are the soft skills or teacher attitudes where the teachers seek advise from each other instead of working alone and where they allocate time for everyone.

Also, entering a school and seeing that there are resources needed for all different types of children is important as it shows the school embracing diversity and it facilitates positive self-esteem in the children.

I am 100% in agreement with you Annmarie. If teachers have a positive mindset and attitude towards diversity it will help all learners understand diversity and to value the differences among each other.

Resources are very important in catering for that special needs child it helps create self esteem and confidence.

Two important aspects of an inclusive school are:

* The attitude of teachers:  Teachers must be able to understand that  the children in their charge are equally important and they need to give equal opportunity for all the children to learn and grow.  An effective teacher will also seek the assistance an advice of his colleagues when there is doubt in his understanding of a situation.

* Resources:  Lydia has a very good point to include a resource room  that will effectively assist all the children and especially the special needs child. As she stated, an expert who can assist a regular teacher in areas that needs special attention for the individual child.

Two important features of an inclusive school are:

1. Resources- It is important that the school have the necessary resources available to the teacher as well as opportunities for teacher training. The availability of resources will determine the opportunities provided to welcome and include the students in the classroom, providing each child with an equal opportunity for learning.

 2. Attitude- It is necessary that the administrators, teachers, parents and students  have a positive approach to inclusion, ensuring that the environment is welcoming for the learner. In addition all parties involved must be able to collaborate and be in unity for them to better serve the learners and provide differently able students with an equal opportunity.

Two important features for an inclusive school are a building which adheres to the universal design and training for all members of staff. With a structure that caters to all learners despite them having a disability or not and members of staff educated and made aware that the school environment is a no judgement zone, inclusivity will be achieved.

Absolutely true Kenicia.

At my Centre, the building was designed for all, but the teachers are not fully trained in teaching children with a disability. The knowledge we have is from doing our Certificate Course in ECCE or Degree in Education.

i think an aspect that should be in an inclusive school is community involvement/community support.  When the community get involved you have added resources available and they make great PRs to spread the word on what  they school is trying to achieve or achieving.

Activity 1.2 What makes an inclusive school?

Hi everyone,

There are many features of inclusive schools which are considered to be important. We can start with the personnel of the school being warm and welcoming to all students. The personnel, being teachers and administrators, should have that positive attitude which would help all to feel safe and comfortable. Being comfortable and at ease in any environment is positive towards the students performing well in all that they do.

Personnel should be open minded and willing to work with everyone to ensure all students are well taken care of. The physical environment is also very important, and  once all students fell like they belong and the physical amenities are provided for any challenges they may face, students would feel "at home". The necessary resources, financial i.e. would also have to be considered very important  so as to be able to provide all other resources, physical and even specialist human resources to ensure that all students are provided with the best.

Thanks

Regards,

Michelle Ramlal

I do not agree with the idea of a resource room as described in the video and as agreed to by you my colleagues.  By my experience teachers seldom, if at all, utilize such centralized systems.  In my view all teachers should be empowered to become specialists in using a variety of resources to cater for the needs of all students and resources distributed to classrooms.  This, by my experience, has yielded a more positive  outcome with respect to the use of resources.

The staff welcoming and positive attitude towards the children. Also ensuring a high quality environment which will enable children to perform to  their highest potential thus maximize their learning. Ensure the environment meet the needs of all learners. The curriculum must be designed to meet the needs of all children with planning for each child in mind. there must be support for parents.

The issue of inclusive curriculum is very key Counsil. Curriculum developers should ensure that aspects of inclusivity are well captured in the curriculum.

Two important features of an inclusive school are

1. The culture of that school- the schools ability to celebrate each students differences.  How well they promote cultural diversity and participate or educate about such.  The atmosphere at the school is warm and welcoming. Students seem happy and engaged.  Their is no visible indication that students with special needs attend the school since they are all treated as one.

2. Teachers attitude- teachers are willing to go the extra mile to ensure they meet the needs of their students.  Principals support teachers and are open to their suggestions. Staff collaborates and bounce ideas off each other, supporting each other.

What makes an inclusive school?

Two important features of an inclusive school

One would be the soft things such as the teacher attitude. I would like to see a teacher who intentionally seeks out information through research to facilitate learning for that student. A teacher who would collaborate and seek advice with other staff members to enable inclusion. This would enable the teacher to account for all students in the classroom in terms of development. This occurs on a regular basis at the ECCE Centre where I work.

The second feature of an inclusive school is that they should have a Resource Room. Having a very organized resource room enables the teacher to attend to the child that has a special need.  Having a resource room shapes the staff attitude as well as creates self-esteem in learners who may experience challenges in school. By creating self-esteem in learners we are supporting them and telling them that school is for everybody inclusive of you. Technically my centre does not have a resource room. However, resources are stored in large cupboards in the administrator office. My dream would be for the centre to build a resource room where resources can be organized and stored for use to create an efficient and effective inclusive school.

Two important features of an inclusive school are family involvement and the classroom learning area. Inclusive schools must engage and encourage family involvement, in addition the layout of the classroom must be taken into consideration, as well as having developmentally appropriate learning materials and resources (technology, visual aid).

Two important features of an inclusive school are:

(1) the positive attitude of the administration and teachers towards inclusive practices and their willingness to adapt to the needs of the students.

(2) focused collaboration among the stakeholders in order to address challenges that may arise and to brainstorm for planning of inclusive lessons/activities.

Important features of an inclusive school can be the soft skills of the teaching staff at the school and the presence of a resource room with competent persons to aide children with disabilities as well as the teacher. An inclusive school must also be physically structured to encourage the mobility of students with physical disabilities, for example ramps. Schools built in such a way shows that children with such disabilities were considered from the very start.

What makes a scholl inclusive are the attitudes, values and culture that one can visualise even during a visit. Apart from the physical aspects, an inclusive school is felt even in the reception by teachers, administrators etc. Finally, the schools practices such as training their teachers can also contribute towards making a school iclusive. i.e how well they support staff, parents, their willingness to work/partners with NGO's and the community to create awareness, acceptance and allocate resources that promote pro- inclusion contribute to creating an inclusive school.
