Creating an Inclusive School
My first experience is a bit awkward, it is with COVID19. Since March, 2020 a lockdown of all the schools in this island of Jamaica came in effect by the government of this country. This is the most I had ever seen the government implemented. The lockdown has not all been negative. Due to the COVID19 and the lockdown, the implementation of online learning came into effect. Hence, the inclusion of tablets, laptops, free WIFI became a necessity in public schools, homes, and credits given to parents who have their children enrolled in a government institution. Our school which recently upgraded its computer lab with a smartboard before COVID19 is geared towards facilitating the growing minds of students and teachers alike, is definitely on the path of inclusion. Thanks to the principal and stakeholders who opted onboard to get this piece of equipment and lab in a functionable state. However, with the use of these gadgets', earlier injection into the system, it would have been a simpler transition for our growing minds in this digital age. We have been in the technological era for over fifteen years and yet we are still found logging. COVID19 has brought a change to this diaspora. .There is a student at my school whom has been doing exceptionally well since the online learning. This leaves me to conclude that gadgets (tablets and laptops) have its place in the learning scope of creating an inclusive school with proper monitoring. The computer lab is now equipped with furniture, equipment and teachers along with resources are their to carry out their daily function.
Since the lockdown of schools, it has allowed the administrators along with teachers and other stakeholders through collaboration in seeking funding from agencies to help set up the school to suit the needs of all learners. There are students who grasp more from extra curricular activities, doing hands on than working from textbooks. Hence, the auditorium which is being renovated as a multifaceted area will be more useful to all. Ramps are already in place and rails will be installed as well.

Thank you Simone for sharing your school's learning paradigm transformations in the advent of COVID 19 pandemic. It has given me another line of thought where as we embrace online teaching, we should strive to make it inclusive to all learners, more so to those with special needs. Luckily, most online contents and electronic gadgets are adapted with accessibility features.
