Activity 1.6

I was employed at a summer camp for children with disabilities some years ago. The staff was trained for a week before activities commenced and during the duration of the camp. There was also a support group for debriefing which occurred one day per week. This assisted me with effectively supporting students with special needs and it was quite fulfilling. No child should be left behind!

I agree- all children would enjoy and have fun with the activities. Looks like a fun camp. teacher training is really an underlying factor in this program.

Sigrid, This is an excellent example of the importance of collaboration - regular briefings and discussions are so important when dealing with a range of different needs.

I agree with this 100% teachers attitude and teacher training plays a crucial part in the way children grow and develop.

I would have had professional training on catering to the needs of at risk children and catering managing them in the classroom. It was very helpful. I learnt about the role of teacher attitude and how this may negatively or positively affect student behavior. Additionally, the training I received allowed me to review my own practice and assess how my practice. I recognized that some of the strategies we were introduced to could be assimilated into my teaching very easily. The attitude of teachers when they engage in parent collaboration was also highlighted. We only reach out to parents when students were disruptive, this from the onset starts us on a bad foot and affects the way that parents respond. It is important to always have collaboration with parents for both good and bad. Effective communication is key.
