Two features of an inclusive classroom are trained teachers to be effective when teaching children with disabilities and creating a physical environment that will cater to disabled children. After analyzing the reading, I agree with what Daniel and Lydia said in the reading. Unfortunately, my school does not fully cater to children with special needs. We don't have a resource room, not even trained teachers. We mainstream, but as teachers, we have to find strategies to teach children with special needs. However, I have been in a school that has a resource room that caters to children with special needs. I visit a school in Belmopan City, while I was studying, they had a resource room for children with special needs. It mostly catered for slow learners, reading disability and there was only one child with a hearing disability. The resource room had resources that could help those children in need. the teacher was a trained teacher and worked collaboratively with the other teachers in the staff. One day even the principal went to check how the children were doing.
The only problem I observed was that they were taken out of the normal classroom and placed in the resource room for an hour. During the time that they were not in the normal classroom, they were not able to participate in the normal activities given at the time. They were just given notes afterward. At least they have something in place that my school does not have.
Cecilia, thank you for sharing this experience. It informs us on what we should not do in our classes like getting the children with special needs out of class and continuing to teach the rest. This is discrimination.
Hi Cecilla, I took interest in reading about your experiences. You mentioned that as teachers, we have to find strategies to teach children with special needs. This is exactly what happens to teachers who do not have resource rooms at their school. We try out best and find ways to make the child feel included and carter to their needs.
We indeed must find ways to make our classrooms inclusive we must include children with special needs and children without special needs to be placed together , teaching strategies would have to be varied , schools will have to have specialized service providers sucb as speech and language therapists or physical aides , students will have to be grouped so that children with special needs and without special needs can socialize together. Teachers wojkd need additional resources sucb as visual aids , charts or audio equipment, developmentally appropriate learning materials and manipulatives would have to used.Assistive technology wojkd also be something to add so that all learners can be included.
Two features of an inclusive school are: Administrators and teaching staff that are pro-inclusion. There must be a positive attitude towards inclusion, there must be a willingness to work together and always find new strategies and information to better facilitate all the children. An inclusive must have an atmosphere of inclusion where all children with and without disabilities are included.
Two features of an inclusive school are: Competent teachers and appropriate resources. The atmosphere at the school should be one of inclusion. I also feel the resource room is a very important aspect of an inclusive school.
