Attitudes

I want to share an experience when I was at the Primary level. I can recall that the school welcomed a few special students. One of the attitudes school had to address was the misconception students had about children with disabilities. Some students didn`t want to interact with them or simply treated them differently, some even wanted to bully the special students. Open discussions and one to one chat helped a little. There was no problem with the teachers, but I know that there was a lack of resources and expertise to properly address the situation. Teachers were willing to cooperate and were positive, so they did took the challenge and did their best.

I think sometimes all that we can do is our best to meet the needs of the children that we serve.

Positive teacher attitude has to be mirrored by the students. The staff at our school warmly welcomed a child with physical impairments. The students did the same. She was one of the most loved students at the school. The kids would run to the gate, upon her arrival, to carry her school bag to class. They would always do things to assist her and most importantly, include her in normal activities.

Developing positive attitudes

Sometimes these attitudes come from the community. They carried forward to school but the school should try to reduce the challenges these special needs children face when at school.

School administrators play a key role in 'reducing the challenges special needs children face when at school,' by providing, to the best of their ability, appropriate resources (support staff / materials & equipment)  to afford every special needs child equal learning opportunities to improve their weaknesses and further their strengths.

Oftentimes with sensitization, following the positive lead of the class teacher and time, students will respond positively to those with special needs.

Inclusive Education

Positive teacher attitude is imperative to creating an inclusive educational setting, however to make inclusive education "work" resources as well as assistive technology must be readily available.

You are right here, Stephanie. I experienced having a child with social/behavioural issues, as well as language delays. My colleagues and I were open to assisting, we did our own research, we liaised with the family and we did observations and anecdotes.

However, we did not have support from expert personnel or social services, even though we did the referrals. So the situation became a challenge with staff trying our best to meet the child's needs, but due to lack of support, we could only do so much.
