1.5 ethos and culture

Two factors that I believe are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture are strong school leadership and professionalism. I believe that strong school leadership contributes to it because depending on the attitude and behavior they show that is how the staff will perform. Leaders should engage in discussion with their staff so everything flows smoothly in the school. For example in our school, we have meetings once a month to discuss various topics that should help in the betterment of the school and for the benefit of the children. We are always encouraged to do our best during teaching hours and also are given tokens at the end of the school year which teachers really appreciate. We also have assemblies where children are given incentives for their efforts or participation during the school year.

As teachers, we should always be professionals when we are in and out of the classroom. Even if parents, colleagues, or students come up with issues against you, as an educator, you should always be professional. Once I had an experience where this parent didn't like me as her child's teacher due to personal issues. However, I was the teacher and I had to act as such. I used to always be polite to her even if she didn't use to answer me but I tried my best to be as professional as I should be. Afterwards, I taught her child on another level, and I guess that she gave up on her negative attitude toward me and treated me good again and up until now she speaks to me well but I had to be the one acting professionally.

I agree with your statement that strong leadership is a core component in establishing inclusive ethos and culture of a school.

When in the position of a teacher act like a teacher its shows that you are trained and qualified. The most important role of a teacher is to professional.

Yes, and I totally agree with the two factors you mentioned. A strong leadership is the backbone to a good and respectable institution. This always brings along a good ethos and culture. Likewise, being professional in all that you do, strengthens the backbone and as a result brings about collaboration from many if not all the stakeholders. You have a real life example of how your professionalism break the negativity of that person.

True Cecilia, teachers must withhold professionalism at all times when dealing with parents and students especially where different abled children are invloved.

If in leadership positions say board of managent, head of learning institution or section head, positive leadership attitude to all stake holders would greatly assist in creating an inclusive school.

The leaders and teachers must be professional in their conduct, otherwise there will be chaos in the school.

I quite agree with your comment. In some schools leadership is often disregarded and management occurs. As a result, the environment becomes toxic creating a space for animosity to seep in which is always frowned upon.

Ethos and culture

I totally agree with you. Leadership do a play an important role in establishing inclusive ethos and culture in a school. The school community looks at the leadership and their attitude and behavior trickles down to those they serve. Being a leader it is not only dictating it is let us do this. Be an example. You lead by example.

As teachers we do have personal opinions, lives etc... however we must ensure that at all time we portray some level of professionalism because we need to realize we serve people that look up to us, we are shaping lives.

Leadership, leadership, leadership. There can be no success with ineffective leadership. You are quite right by saying "you lead by example. If those at the head display admirable qualities, then others will follow sui, and a positive school ethos can be formed.

As a professional a teacher has to be willing to expand their knowledge and their heart.

Who you follow contributes to shaping your character. Good leadership is expected to foster good followership among teachers and consequently good behavior amongst the teachers and by implications define the ethos and structure of the school where they work.

I agree with you that leadership plays an important role in contributing to an  inclusive ethos and culture. Good leadership is necessary, they need to set by example. Being professional at all times is also necessary since we a role models to our students and they look at how we conduct ourselves.

I strongly agree with your choices. I also believe that strong and positive leadership can help a school and it's staff to be able to accomplish a lot for the benefit of their children and everyone else concerned. When there is good leadership a good example is set from the top.

And like you said a teacher is always a teacher whether you are in or out of the class and school. Being a professional has to always be a part of your character you may never know where or when you are going to be called out.
