The attitudes that Daniel refers to comes from a level
of unawareness and being uneducated about the topic of persons who have
disabilities. Some people are very superstitious and may believe in myths which
corrupts their belief system which may result in discrimination.
In my experience, sadly I have seen cases where persons
were discriminated against because of their disabilities educators have been
ignorant to understanding what was happening before their eyes. This was a challenge within the school environment other educators assisted in caring for
the child, lending emotional support to the child’s parent ensuring that the
child was being well taken cared of. The administration conducted workshops to
educate teachers who were not knowledgeable about children with disabilities and to
remove the pitiful and outcast mentality of teachers.
As a teacher, you should have an open mind, provide
your students with a friendly atmosphere in order to achieve positivity within
the environment. Teacher’s attitude plays a tremendous role in children’s growth
and development. Therefore, teachers should set the tone in a classroom to
create a warm and welcoming culture so that children feel comfortable and are
focused driven to develop and make progression rather than regression.
