1.4 Developing Positive Attitudes

Having a positive attitude from teachers is of vast importance in having a inclusion. It is the teacher’s responsibility as a role model to not discriminate against a child with a disability for the growth and development of the institution and the child and in having a successful inclusive experience.

Unfortunately, I was bare to witness discrimination of a child (A) who was screened and confirmed of having Attention Deficit Disorder. It wasn’t the fault of the child's that he could not have controlled his actions, reactions, and responses. He would always be fidgety. As a result of this, his seating was at the front of the teacher’s desk. However, when it was a certain teacher’s scheduled time for that class, the teacher would always have him exchange seats with the person at the back of the class.

There was at this school, a culture of eating together at lunch in the lunch room. The norm was that one child from every class would sit at the head table with the principal. On a day, where the principal was absent, the teacher who discriminated, sat at the head table and on this day, the child (A) was supposed to take his turn to sit at the head table for lunch. While proceeding towards the head table, the teacher in the presence of the entire school population, shouted, “just get back!” to the child. After that most humiliating day, the child had had enough and threw tantrums for his parents to not attend school.

This outright poor attitude of the teacher, hindered the comfort, welcoming and safe factor of schooling for that particular child. The child definitely did not feel welcomed or even safe. This teacher’s behavior proved to be a hindrance as well in having an inclusive school and inclusive education.

I think the attitude to teacher impacts the learning process, and students.
