Two factors that are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture are leadership and attitudes.
I believe when you are in a school that has a strong leadership the staff members will perform well and adapt to the school policies. The leader should promote an inclusive and caring ethos where everyone is valued. This will aid with the performance of the staff. The school should develop the children understanding of their responsibilities of their school life. At my school we have a strong leader who emphasis is on celebrating difference and diversity through the curriculum which celebrates and enhance children learning. All the children have equal access to the work of the school and this is achieved through clear policies and mission statement, which shows how the school engages the children and community. The principal has regular staff meetings where the staff meets and discuss matters that will to develop the children learning..The school has award ceremonies where the each child is awarded a certificates and trophies. The certificates are given for different areas that every child can feel apart of the school. Awards given for perfect attendance for the school year, best behaviours, most helpful just to name a few.
The attitudes of both the leader and the staff will contribute to the ethos and culture of the school. Our negative behaviours will hinder the way forward to a Inclusive school. The children will feed off our negative attitudes towards them. For example only awarding the typical child. In a school culture where this is practice does not say good for the school. We have to sell our school and let the wider public and individuals with an Atypical child see us as a caring institution. I will say again a strong leader will also tell the attitude of her team. A strong leader results in a strong team.
