Professional development

One of the professional development course I took was a Special Education workshop for two weeks. During those two weeks we were able to participate in hands on activities which cater for all the children in your class. One of the strategies I learnt was breaking down task/work for the children into smaller and attainable tasks, so the child will not feel overwhelmed and they will be able to accomplish the work at their own pace moving them from one place to another until they achieve their goals.

The entire staff were part of the workshop so we all were exposed to the all the strategies. After the workshop we were able to sit down together, plan and execute the strategies that we learnt.  We were  all excited to practice what we learnt and use it with all the children at the school. We found that it was helpful because all the teachers were equipped with strategies that they can use.

That was a good starting point Sally. In coming weeks you will learn on ways of improving and mornitoring inclusivity in school.

I think these strategies are useful and can be used throughout to assist students in learning. Collaborating ideas as a team can also support and contribute to an inclusive environment.

Professional development has to be a continuum for the simple fact that not everything the teacher/educator needs to know is gleaned from one course. This is the second online course that I have attended on inclusion. I attended this one for the reminders and the acquisition of any new knowledge or ways of looking at inclusion to further enhance praxis, and gain  understanding of what inclusion means to educators across the education sectors both locally and internationally. My objectives are being fulfilled.

I am all for the workshops but sometimes it gets intimidating when ideals have to be applied realistically.
