1.4 Attitudes

In the article Daniel speaks about the teacher's negative attitude and low expectations for student success among the differently abled children. He also acknowledges parents and on a larger scale African society's negative attitude toward children with disabilities as well. In both cases I think that personal and cultural beliefs have a great impact on the thought process of the adults involved.

I can share an incident where the mother and grandmother were in denial about the diagnosis of a student, and because of that assistance (in the form a a teacher's aide) from Student Support was delayed for an extended period of time. However due to the determination of the Administrator, observation and recording by the child's teacher, and several conferences with the parents, the child got an aide and was able to transition to primary school.
