1.2 Inclusive Schools

Inclusive schools as the name suggests include everyone, all children regardless of their abilities or disabilities. One factor of an inclusive school is the attitude of staff (teachers, administrators) toward children with disabilities. How accepting they are of the differences, how tolerant they are of each child's shortcomings, how willing they are to treat with and go the extra distance, and how do they create an ethos of acceptance among the children who do not have disabilities.

Another factor that impacts inclusion is allocation of resources. While all children with disabilities may not require personalized accommodation, personnel and materials, some do. For example infrastructure, braille, psychologists or some type of assistive technology. In my case while the government advocates for inclusion, there is a lack of financial resources which means that in many cases children with disabilities either attend private schools, if their parents can afford it, or are mainstreamed into primary school with minimal assistance or are forced to stay at home.

At ECCE Centres it depends on the severity of the child's disability whether he/she can be accepted.

Hi Shelly,

I am in total agreement with you. For us to truly have inclusive schools, all stakeholders have to be willing to do all within their power to ensure that  everything is in place to treat with each child, with or without disabilities. This would include the teachers attitude, resources, and physical environment. All must be able to feel welcome and comfortable as they engage in their learning experience.

Great job.

Hi Shelly

I agree with you but I want to add that the curriculum must be designed to support inclusion.  Therefore, when this is planned then children will be able to perform to their highest potential. Planning for the individual child  will include all resources needed for teaching and learning special needs children.

1.2 Inclusive schools

Hi Shelly ,

I agree with your point that the necessary resources for inclusion in many cases in our schools are not available. We have a mandate of no child left behind but in reality many children can not even assess classes especially now during this pandemic.

Inclusive schools should be a school that have teachers who are willing to go the extra mile for their students . Each and every student should feel as if they belong . They should be recognized  for who they are as an individual and their abilities. Teachers should work as a team  for the benefit of their students . Collaboration should be on going to achieve the goals set out for students with special needs . Teacher must be resourceful in  gaining the knowledge to adapt ,modify and accommodate all students especially those with special needs.
