Pick out two factors that you think are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture.
According to Wikipedia, ethos denotes the disposition, character of fundamental values peculiar to a specific person, people, corporation or movement.
Culture, according to the Oxford Dictionary, refers to the ideas, customs and social behaviour of a particular people or society.
Two factors that are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture are:
A reformed mindset. When teachers see that inclusive schools will benefit the country, then the education system will be revolutionized. Until we move away from the ideology of "my school" and see the bigger picture, inclusion will not be a reality. Best practices that make particular school excel should be shared with the teaching fraternity so that all students benefit, not just a selected few.
This changed mind-set must also be demonstrated by the parents too. Parents must see that it is necessary that all children be in the same learning space, learning together. They must be on board with it since students are being prepared for life and in the workplace there is no segregation.
Educational resources. For inclusion to be a reality, there must be tools to work with. Resources must be available that will cater to the needs of students with special needs. Resource personnel should also be available to give teachers and learners the assistance necessary. Schools can start accommodating students even with the infrastructure they have now if they have the tools to work with.
