Activity 1:5 An inclusive ethos and culture.

A teacher's caring and kind attitude is one factor which effectively contributes to an inclusive ethos and culture in a school. The teacher shows kindness from the moment of arrival, where parents, families, caregivers and child are greeted using their names and are warmly welcomed into the school. Teachers show care by being sensitive to families diversity and valuing each child's individual uniqueness.

Another factor which effectively contributes to an inclusive ethos is respectful relationships between teacher and teacher; teacher and parents / families; teacher and child; and child with child. Parents know their child best, and when teachers have regular conversations with them, the teacher gain valuable insights of who the child is and can plan activities to further the child's learning and development.

I worked at a school where resource personnel and stakeholders were regularly invited to staff meetings to increase teacher training. Topics covered included first aid to self care to understanding basic screening tools. All of these training helped to create an inclusive ethos and culture as teachers felt supported and better equipped.

Great points ! To me, the essence of creating ethos and culture in any school, especially in an inclusive school is respect for all . Respect  goes along in  creating  the climate of an inclusive school, as a result of this everyone feels valued.

Merlin well said, respect is very essential in the ethos and culture of an inclusive school. This will help with misconceptions and give everyone the opportunity to change their mind set by interacting and understanding each other. With respect we can accept that we are all different but our right to an education are the same.

Maria I agree with your discussion we all need to work together administration, teachers, parents, community and stakeholders for the principles of inclusivity in its design and delivery to work.

There should be no form of discrimination as everyone especially staff is responsible for all children.

I most certainly agree. In addition, there is also the need for adaptation of environment within the classroom as well as a whole school as another factor that promotes inclusivity for example there are students who require ramp and rails for movements throughout the school. Another, factor is a reward system which allows improved motivation and responsibility.

I agree. Encouraging parents to visit the school to have one on one conferencing with staff promotes growth not only in the child but the staff and parents as well. Teachers can ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the child and themselves and work in achieving betterment thus creating a better school.

I completely agree that teachers' attitudes play an integral role in creating a positive ethos. It's a love thing. Children are very perceptive and can sense when they are not being treated right, even if it is not demonstrated overtly.

A teacher's kind and caring attitude is what is fundamental because when children feel loved and safe, they will become happy in their environment and that is the best way to learn.

You have identified two important points. Teacher attitude can set the tone for the day. You gave some practical examples of how teachers can set the right tone at the start of the day.

The attitude of teachers do play an integral role in creating an inclusive ethos and culture in school. A positive attitude will create an environment that will blossom and foster learning and development of the child and strengthen parent teacher relationship.
