Activity 1.4 Developing positive attitudes
My approach or interpretation in dealing with attitudes is not physically recognized but addresses the academically inclined students who give me lip service. There is a hidden problem that I am faced with in online classes that I want to curb in my students. My students are encouraged to ask questions. I am impartial with my students and everyone is treated the same. However, they want to falsely impress upon me that they understand the subject matter but they really don't.
1. They don't understand the concept of the lesson being taught but out of fear of ridicule or embarrassment they say that they do understand.
2. They have a higher expectation of themselves and sometimes they will say that they get it but secretly hope to catch up during the course of the lesson being taught.
3. They are afraid to disappoint the Teacher and Parent because of the perceived expectation coming from them. So, they have a false impression that the Teacher will be disappointed in them if they said that they don't understand the concept/subject matter being taught right away.
These factors are a recipe for creating a deficit in learning because sometimes if you have a progressive lesson where the second lesson is dependent on the first and the third is dependent on the second etc. When the student gets into more complicated subject matter it tends to get much more difficult for them.
Although I have not experienced any disruptive or maladaptive behaviour from students in online classes, I'm not discounting the fact that it does not exist and can pose a challenge that it exists. The rationale behind their behaviour that the students are not reacting to a particular stimuli in the classroom but are affected by domestic issues, or psychological issues or social issues outside of the classroom. It falls into a broad spectrum of things.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are some students who are reluctant to engage in the social situation. Several factors can create this type of behaviour which can fall into a very broad spectrum and can include everything from:
1. Drugs being introduced into the mother too late during the child birth process which can cause a child being born with depressive tendencies.
2. A child being an only child who has learnt to play by himself and is quite happy with that type of behaviour. He or she may not be too enthusiastic about socializing because of the self-sufficient nature that they have developed.
