positive behaviour stratergies

I have seen teachers using strategies such as penance curb behaviors but this may not work for a differently abled child or attention seeking child but it is a very subtle type punishment because after completing this penance, a behavior will be discontinued to avoid more penance. However I  think that reward systems work like  break in between sessions that may include a song or a game.
