Activity 1.2- What makes an inclusive school

Two important features of an inclusive school are the attitudes of teachers and the physical environment.

Attitudes of teachers

A teacher’s attitude is critical in changing the environment of a school. They should demonstrate a positive attitude towards inclusion. Teachers are responsible for taking accountability for all their students and should work in collaboration with their colleagues to facilitate inclusive education. Teachers should work together and continuously research information to cater for learning needs of the child.

Physical Environment

Adapting the physical environment is also very important in providing an inclusive setting. Having rails and ramps demonstrates that the school is catering for children with wheelchairs, walking canes etc. Having a resource room is also essential as it shows that there are resources available for attending to the special needs child and to even provide support for teachers. This is a great driver for an inclusive school.
