Two important features of an inclusive school

Physical Environment

The physical environment in an inclusive school should be made accessible to all students.   Special attention should be place on the diverse needs of students, therefore, adaptations of school environment should provide infrastructures such as rails and ramps. Considerations of physical layout, seating positions and classroom spaces are important to accommodate students with disabilities and special needs.

"Soft Aspects"

The attitude of all stakeholders towards inclusion is critical to support children with disabilities and special needs.  Among the stakeholders, teachers attitudes and willingness to reach students with diverse needs are of paramount importance for effective teaching and learning and to meet the potential of all students.  Teachers need to continuously avail themselves to research on new/improved strategies for effective teaching and learning so that the needs of all students are met, including students with special needs.

Administration also play a crucial role in promoting inclusion, not merely by boasting about inclusion and diversity in schools.  In allocating resources, administration should consider the special need students: materials needed for effective teaching/learning, staff development of human resources to meet and understand how to deal with diverse needs.

Inclusive education is a process that involves meeting the needs of all students so that they can achieve their full potential.  This must include all stakeholders in education supporting and promoting inclusiveness.
